What is Prosthetics?
Prosthetics is the science and art involved in treating a patient by use of a prosthesis (artificial limb).
A prosthetist is a person who having completed the approved course of education and training is qualified in the art of creating prostheses (plural of prosthesis). They are authorised by national authority to design, measure and fit prostheses.
A prosthesis is an externally applied device used to replace absent or deficient limb segments.
The function of any prosthetic socket is to transmit external forces to the skeleton via the soft tissue.
It is worth noting that successful prosthetic fitting i.e. optimal restoration of function and comfortable ambulation (walking) starts at the time of surgery.
