Volunteer Visitors – UK & Northern Ireland

The Limbless Association, one of our partner charities runs a nation-wide (UK & Northern Ireland only) network of volunteer visitors, each of whom has lost one or more limbs.

What does the network do?

Where possible the LA try to match each client and visitor by age, sex, interests and limb loss. Therefore creating a common bond and allowing the Volunteer Visitor to draw on their own valuable experience. They provide practical advice and reassurrance to the person they are visiting but also to their family and friends – see how our volunteers help.

Visits can be arranged before and after amputation, at home or at the hospital.

In areas where a Volunteer Visitor is not available the LA will endeavour to arrange contact via the phone or by letter.

Please note that visits are mainly requested by amputees but are open to all those with limb loss. Referrals are also welcome from caring professionals on an amputees behalf.

How do I become a Volunteer Visitor?
To become a Volunteer Visitors in your area (UK, Northern Ireland & Eire only) involves giving people who have been born without limbs or who have lost limbs through amputations the benefit of your own practical experience combined with general support and encouragement.

The visiting may be to people in hospital before or after operations or in their own homes. Only non-medical, non-technical and non-legal advice is involved.

To apply the initial step is to let the LA know how you feel about doing this kind of voluntary work, your general interests and whether you have done voluntary work of any kind before. This will help them to “match” the Volunteer Visitor to the client as far as possible.

Secondly one or two references from your Limb Centre or people in the voluntary, employment, leisure pursuits etc. fields are also required.
