Keeping the Residual Limb Clean

How to keep the residual limb clean

The Residual Limb (stump)

The residual limb should be cleaned in the morning and the evening or after exercise or increased activity. It is important to make sure that the residual limb is dry before donning the liner (sleeve), socket or sock.

Wash the skin thoroughly with warm water and a fragrance free or anti-bacterial soap or cleanser. Rinse the limb with clean water, ensuring you remove all traces of the soap or cleanser. Dry the skin thoroughly and leave for a short time before donning the artificial limb.

The Socket

The socket should be cleaned often, ideally every day in warmer weather to remove the accumulated perspiration on the inner surface if you wear a direct contact limb. Even if you wear a liner you should still clean the socket frequently.

Wash with warm water and a mild soap. Wipe the inside of the socket with a cloth. Do not fill the sleeve with water as this can affect the locking mechanism. Dry the socket thoroughly before donning it.

The Sleeve (Liner)

The liner should be cleaned every day to remove the accumulated perspiration on the inner surface. It is recommended that the liner be cleaned with an anti-bacterial soap or antiseptic wipe or cleaner. Ensure that the liner is wiped with a clean cloth and warm water to remove any residual soap. Wipe the inside of the socket with a cloth. Dry the liner thoroughly before donning it.

The Stump Sock

Wearing a stump sock can help keep perspiration away from the skin. A light sock can have a cooling effect, as well as providing additional protect for the residual limb.

You must change your stump sock every day and sometimes more often in hot weather. Your limb centre will provide you with enough stump socks to enable you to wear a clean one every day. Most stump socks have washing instructions on a label on the inside of the sock. Do follow these instructions to ensure you are washing the socks at the right temperature. If you need more stump socks speak to your prosthetist.

A good tip is to put a rubber ball inside the sock to help reshape it after washing.
