Care of the Residual Limb
Products for care of the residual limb
If you have a persistent problem please do consult your rehab consultant, as it is likely that they have come across and treated the problem before. For minor irritations there are many products which can help. It is advisable that you do not try these products without talking to your doctor as only you and he will know about your personal medical history. It is worth bearing in mind that what works for some people may not work for others and you might need to try different products to find the one that suits you.
Moisturisers
There are different schools of thought on the use of moisturisers. Some amputees find that using moisturisers or creams help with the prevention of abrasions. This is particularly useful for high activity amputees who need to prevent chaffing.
Moisturising the socket prior to donning the liner or socket can lessen the likelihood of abrasions. Lotions that have been created specifically for amputees include:
- ALPS Skin lotion (silicon based)
- Derma Prevent
- OpSite (Smith & Nephew) a film like product
- Cica Care (Smith & Nephew)
Treatment for abrasions and irritations:
For abrasions and irritations there are medicated lotions such as antibiotic ointments, with zinc oxide. They are used to treat and prevent infections in minor cuts and abrasions. Your rehabilitation consults will recommend a product they feel will best suit your circumstances.
Second skin products promote healing and protect the skin through a combination of medicated solutions and adhesive bandage. Products which offer this second skin are:
- Compede plasters
- Deodorants
OttoBock has a range of skin care products called Derma Skin Care.
- Derma Clean – anti-bacterial cleaner for the stump and socket.
- Derma Prevent – lotion to cover and protect the skin protective coating
- Derma Repair – anti-bacterial lotion that relieves and repairs irritated skin while moisturising it.
