Prosthetic Knees for Children

Photo of Total Knee 1100 - The Small Wonder by ÖssurFor many years, the theory in fitting infants with above-knee amputations has been to fit them initially without a knee joint and to wait until they are a little older, perhaps around age three or more, before introducing a bending knee into the artificial leg.

The current trend is turning towards fitting young children with a bending knee joint right at the time of their very first fitting. Children, it is felt, quickly and naturally adapt to a bending knee joint when it is provided right from the start.

There are, of course, fewer options for children than adults on the market. Most options for children are single axis and polycentric designs.

Single Axis:

  • 3R38 and 3R39 by Otto Bock (the 3R39 has a manual lock)

Polycentric (4 bar):

  • Child’s System by DAW
  • Children’s System by Endolite
  • Small 4-Bar Knee by USMC
  • Child’s Play by Seattle Limb Systems
  • 3R66 by Otto Bock (with rotatable foot section)
  • Total Knee 1100 – The Small Wonder by Össur (seven axis)

Hydraulic:

  • The 3R65 by Otto Bock
  • The Achapend Junior
