Lauren Hall – Prosthetic Limbs in Sport: are they an advantage?

by wendy

I thought you might be interested to read Lauren Hall’s very comprehensive project on prostheses and sport. She has clearly done a lot of research and it makes interesting and informative reading. Certainly food for thought.

Lauren has kindly allowed me to post it on the Website – I hope you enjoy it.

(Please note, this is a big file and it make take a bit of time to download.)

LAUREN HALL

Lauren Hall

My name is Lauren Hall and I am 15 years old. I am currently attending school and was told I had to do a case study for my science coursework. So because my hobbies are mainly sport related, with my favourite being my athletics – sprinting I became really interested in this topic, had to choose a question to base it on and mine was ‘Does the use of prosthetic legs mean that non able bodied athletes have an advantage? I contacted Wendy for some advice and the website was a great help!

Thanks Lauren. Must have taken you ages to research it all. Well done. I wouldn’t mind if I could run but my leg (b/k) I use for cycling so the foot needs to be stiffer than if just used for walking or running. Also for cycling, limbs need to be slightly longer to compensate for loss of ankle movement. Another piece of research for you perhaps? Best wishes, Leggz.
