CONFERENCE – Disability: Extending Access and Opportunity

by wendy

Disability – Extending Access and Opportunity – A Call to Action Leeds 28 June 2010

I have pleasure in attaching details of this conference which will be of direct benefit to organisations engaged in promoting equality of access and opportunity. The conference has a distinguished panel of speakers and workshop presenters including Dame Evelyn Glennie, the international musician and motivational speaker.

The conference will be opened by Donna Lavin, a young disabled actress from Leeds who recently took the leading role in the highly acclaimed Radio 4 production of The Pursuits of Darleen Fyles. (now being filmed for TV)

There will be three interactive workshops. The first of these will be taken by Andrea Lewis, Policy Director of SkilltheNational Bureau for Students with Disabilities. In her workshop Andrea will help delegates identify and operate best practice in educational provision, recruitment and retention and define next steps to communicate, implement and reinforce non-discriminatory practices. This workshop will be of particular value in ensuring legal compliance and in adopting transparent recruitment procedures in HR. It will be also of benefit to anyone engaged in promoting the welfare and progress of disabled students.

A second workshop will be led to Edward Vickerman, a dyslexic teacher who overcame numerous obstacles to become a teacher on the way to receiving the Plato Award for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year 2009. Edward will focus on raising aspirations and expectations

The third workshop will be a piece of debate theatre taken by Mind the Gap, involving disabled and non disabled actors.

‘I thought your conference on Protecting Vulnerable Children and Young Adults was extremely well organised. I admired the immense care you took over the detailed planning, and the way you kept speakers fully informed and consulted throughout the planning process. The atmosphere at the conference itself was relaxed but also thoughtful, purposeful and determined, and this was in no small way a consequence of your superb organisation and planning’

Robin Richardson, Director of Insted/former Director of the Runnymede Trust
