Wheelchair Dance Sport – Opportunity
Would you like to take part in Wheelchair Dance Sport?
The BBC is looking for Wheelchairs users to participate in a competitive sporting documentary exploring this exciting new sport.
The series will consist of 6 x 1 hour programmes for broadcast on BBC3 early next year and will be a televised, non-live competition to find Britain’s best couple in Combi dancing (one sitting and one standing dancer). 7 couples will be selected to receive intensive training from the best coaches in the world and will be filmed as they learn the necessary skills to master the discipline.
The BBC are looking to generate an intelligible discussion about disability within the programme, and are therefore looking for a cross-section of people to be involved. They aren’t looking for people who have danced before, but personalities who are eager to try something new and are looking for a new challenge. The only limitations are that all competitors have to use manual wheelchairs (if they are regular wheelchair users) and, as the sport is quite upper body intensive, are only able to consider people who have a relatively strong upper body, which, sadly, will rule out upper body amputees.
This is a unique opportunity to promote this fantastic sport in Britain. At the moment, we are lagging behind the rest of the world as we have no British representatives in the European Championships. It is also an amazing opportunity to see people who use wheelchairs in a primetime television show that promises to inspire, entertain and excite the whole nation.
